STEPS
My best friends Anthony and Andrea have always been like family, so when I had the chance to partner with Valspar again, I wanted to give them a comfortable retreat that felt calm and personal. Their room had great natural light and nice furniture, so the focus was on paint and architectural details.
Andrea gravitates toward rich and moody tones, so after testing samples we picked Sweet Currant 1001-7A in Valspar® Ultra Interior Paint + Primer in Eggshell. It feels deep and sophisticated without making the room feel dark.
I picked up two gallons of paint along with all the MDF boards for the window casings and shiplap feature. I also grabbed a Valspar® Walls, Ceilings & Trim 6-Piece Knit Roller Kit, caulk, spackle, and a non-slip canvas drop cloth. Everything came from Lowe’s, including new blinds and a ceiling fan for the final touches.
I removed the old sills and used them as templates for new 1x6 MDF stools. Each window got 1x4 side casings, a 1x4 apron, and a 1x6 top casing with a 1-inch lattice fillet and 1x2 cap. I secured everything with my brad nailer and filled all seams and holes with spackle and caulk. Repeating this for three windows took time but was worth it.
The dresser niche was a perfect spot for texture. I installed vertical primed MDF shiplap using a laser level to keep the lines straight. Uneven walls meant trimming out the edges for a clean finish. Everything was caulked and filled before painting.
I moved furniture away from the walls, filled small holes, and wiped down all surfaces to remove dust. Then I taped off edges and baseboards and laid the drop cloth to protect the carpet.
After cutting in around the edges, I rolled the walls with a roller extender for faster coverage. Valspar Ultra Interior Paint + Primer recoats after 2–4 hours, but I let everything dry overnight before applying the second coat for a smooth, even finish.
Once the walls were dry, I used a brush and foam roller to paint the window casings, baseboards, doors, and shiplap. Brushing and back-rolling gave everything a professional look and blended the texture nicely.
I swapped the old light for a ceiling fan and installed custom-cut blinds from Lowe’s. Next time I’ll wait a bit longer for the paint to fully cure to avoid minor scratches, but touch-ups were easy.
I finished with a deep green comforter, light pink sheets, and euro pillows for contrast. Framed photos of Anthony and Andrea made the room feel personal and peaceful. The moody walls and soft textures created a perfect place for them to relax.
