Valspar Primer: Living Room
How important is primer? After all, it’s like painting a wall just to paint it again. As it turns out: it’s pretty important. Primer is the key to a pro finish that will last for years, and here’s what you need to know to do it right.
What You'll Need
WHEN DO I USE PRIMER?
It's generally always a good idea to use primer, but here are some specific situations where it’s even more important:
- Switching from a low sheen to a high sheen, or vice versa
- Changing from a dark color to a light color
- Our High-Hiding Primer can help your new color look its best
- If your walls have a lot of repairs
- The room is humid, like a bathroom
If using Paint + Primer, be sure to apply two coats.
Primer is typically an off-white color. Many paints achieve their true color—and in fewer coats—when applied over this kind of primer.
The simplest option is to use a paint and primer combination, such as Valspar Reserve. Valspar color samples are conveniently coded to tell you which shade of gray you might need to achieve. Ask a store associate for help on choosing the right shade of gray. You can also get a free color consultation from our color experts, and they’ll point you in the right direction.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRIMER?
When properly applied, primer has many benefits:
- Smoother, more professional look
- Blocks stains and odors
- Assures better paint adhesion
- Speeds topcoating
- Prevents peeling
- Gives true color in fewer coats
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR PRIMR TO DRY?
Most latex primers dry to the touch in 30 minutes to one hour. But for best results, don’t paint until the primer completely dries—which can take up to 3 hours, depending on temperature and humidity.
Once the primer is completely dry, it’s prime time for painting.
