THE ROOM OF YOUR DREAMS. LITERALLY.

A bedroom is where every day starts and ends, so it’s worth making sure it’s a space you love. Whether you’re looking for a splash of color to brighten your day, or a soothing shade to wind down with, you’re in the right place. Here’s what you need to know about bedroom wall painting.

Pillow-covered bed against sandy neutral half wall accent color with matching shelf and modern side-table lamps.
Maple Tan
V085-3
Grounding earthy shade with a desert vibe that’s trending at home once again. Its strong connection with nature and warm undertones can be finished with a warm white.
Warm neutral bedroom walls with blue dresser and upholstered bed with coverings in shades of patterned blue and white.
Beach Dune
V134-2
A comforting tone that leaves a blank canvas to fill with our own interpretations. Comfy furnishings layered with plush blankets and pillows create a relaxing space.
Bedroom wall painted moss green halfway up the wall to a light neutral. Rustic bed with layers of textured coverings.
Thames Fog
V144-5
Naturally therapeutic, this dusky moss green creates a calming escape in any room. Soft neutrals and minimalist décor allow this charming green to make a statement.
Attic bedroom with pastel lavender walls, daybed covered in velvety soft blanket. A small round table.
Violet Dusk
V078-4
Natural dyes are introducing new pastels into the home. This familiar lavender creates a soft but unexpectedly dynamic feel that is warm and inviting. Carry color onto ceilings to give small rooms a larger appearance.
Bedroom with warm gray walls and bed between two windows. Light neutral trim runs mid-height around the room.
Gentry Gray
V133-4
Embodying minimalism, this fresh shade of warm grey inspires a feeling that is modern and natural. Bold architectural features take center stage against gentle gray walls.
Near-monochromatic bedroom of gray-and-neutrals palette with mirrored fireplace and glass-enclosed candles.
Moon Shot
V123-1
Gray shifting warmer and this one feels like a hug. The warmth of light gray provides a place for retreat and rest for much needed sleep.

FINDING YOUR COLOR

Choosing a color can get overwhelming – but here are a few things that can help narrow down your options.

Set the mood

Finding the right mood is especially important for a bedroom, and it can be a great way to start narrowing down your color choices. If you want a relaxing and restorative space, try looking at muted or natural tones. Another option is to take the opportunity to express yourself, and choose a color that reflects your personal tastes and style.

Bedding, linens, and curtains can all be great sources of inspiration, too. Try finding a color that complements these décor elements.

For a balanced, natural space, try choosing a wall color that’s lighter than your floor color.

Look to your lighting

Lighting plays a huge role in how you perceive color in a space. It’s common to have multiple light sources – from windows, to lamps, to light fixtures – each of which can change how a color appears.

Natural light changes the appearance of colors throughout the day, from sunrise to midday to sunset. A room full of natural light brings out subtle undertones in lighter, cooler colors. Meanwhile, interior lighting offers a wide range of warm to cool tones. Warm light temperatures are popular, and they can help vivid and bold colors feel more livable.

Start with chips and samples

There’s no substitute for seeing paint on your walls – so no matter how much you love a color, you should always take the time to order and use paint chips and samples. Seeing a color with your own eyes and in the context of your space will go a long way toward getting a bedroom you love.

To get the best out of your samples, try to recreate how you’ll typically experience your space. This means using the paint on multiple walls, and seeing how different lighting affects the color. Be sure to check in throughout the day, so you get a better sense for the color as lighting conditions change.

PICKING THE PAINT

Once you’ve got a color, then it’s time to pick a paint. It might not seem as important as color, but the right paint is a crucial part of getting results you love.

Choosing the right sheen

What makes a sheen the right one? For a bedroom, it’s all about personal expression. Traditionally, flat and eggshell have been most commonly used, but since it’s a lower-traffic space you can feel free to go with what you like most, rather than what’s most durable or washable. Take some time to test out different sheens, and go with what feels right. For more information on sheens, take a look at our sheen article.

GET THE RIGHT TOOLS

For a bedroom, you’ll want to have both a roller and a brush on hand. Woven roller covers, like Purdy White Dove, are ideal because they’re shed-resistant and leave a smooth finish. And for brushes, go with Purdy XL Dale brushes for clean edges and smooth finish.
